Nick PearsonIFNY INTERNS PROGRAM

New York IRD Partner
Nick Pearson is President of
the Insurance Federation
of New York.

Last year Nick initiated IFNY Interns -- a summer program to introduce motivated local high school students from disadvantaged personal circumstances to the New York insurance and financial services sector. The goal was to provide an opportunity for the insurance industry to positively influence the career paths and life choices of youngsters who have demonstrated a deep interest in achievement and overcoming their difficult beginnings.

IFNY Interns was administered in cooperation with YES!Solutions, Inc., a Harlem-based 501(c)(3) community service organization. YES!Solutions is well known to the insurance community through Mary Lanning, an insurance and financial services consultant who personally launched the work of YES!Solutions more than 40 years ago and continues to lead its programs. YES!Solutions, in accord with a plan developed with IFNY, selected and prepared six qualified high school students to be IFNY Interns. These young teens were part of the Boys Hope Girls Hope residential community in Brooklyn. Boys Hope Girls Hope [bhghny.org] provides at-risk youngsters with free structured group residential living, where counseling, mentoring, academic opportunities and frequent community service lead them on a steady path to personal achievement and success. Almost all Boys Hope Girls Hope participants go on to college, many on scholarship.

Over a period of eight weeks, IFNY members served as volunteer hosts for the IFNY Interns, who learned about the members' business operations from the ground up. IFNY members also raised $36,000 in charitable contributions to YES!Solutions and Boys Hope Girls Hope to defray the costs of administering the IFNY Interns program and in support of the Boys Hope Girls Hope program.

The feedback from last year's program was extremely positive and heartening. The companies that hosted the IFNY Interns reported that the experience was gratifying and emotionally rewarding. Many of their employees were deeply touched by their personal interactions with the IFNY Interns. Tellingly, all were eager to do it again. The IFNY Interns all reported that they learned a great deal and would carry wonderful memories of the program for the rest of their lives. Our own experience at EWP as a host certainly bears out all the enthusiastic reports.

IFNY is now gearing up for the IFNY Interns program for the summer of 2013. If any of our readers are interested in learning more about the program, they are encouraged to contact:
